Why Regular Oil Changes Still Matter

Why Regular Oil Changes Still Matter

Of all the maintenance a car needs, the oil change is the most routine, and that familiarity sometimes makes drivers underrate it. Modern engines and synthetic oils have stretched the intervals, but the basic job the oil does has not changed. Keeping it fresh is still the cheapest insurance you can buy for an engine.

What the Oil Is Doing

Engine oil lubricates hundreds of moving parts that would otherwise grind against each other, but that is only part of its job. It also carries heat away from hot components, holds tiny particles of debris in suspension so they do not score surfaces, and contains additives that neutralize acids and resist corrosion. It is doing all of this thousands of times a minute.

How Oil Wears Out

Over miles and time, oil breaks down. The additives that protect against wear and acid get used up, the oil collects combustion byproducts and fine particles, and it gradually loses its ability to flow and protect as designed. Used up oil does not lubricate as well, which means more friction, more heat, and faster wear on the engine.

The Cost of Skipping It

Running too long on old oil lets sludge form and accelerates wear on bearings, the valvetrain, and other parts that are expensive to repair. An engine starved of clean oil can suffer damage that dwarfs the cost of a lifetime of oil changes. This is the classic case where a small recurring expense prevents a large unexpected one.

Following the Right Interval

Follow the interval in your owner's manual or the car's oil life monitor rather than an old rule of thumb. Synthetic oil and modern engines often allow longer intervals than drivers expect, but severe use, such as lots of short trips, towing, or extreme temperatures, shortens them. When in doubt, lean toward changing it sooner.

Check Between Changes

Between services, glance at the oil level with the dipstick now and then. A level that drops steadily can reveal a leak or burning before it becomes serious, and topping off keeps the engine protected until the next change.

The oil change endures as the best value in car care for a simple reason: a small, predictable cost protects the most expensive component in the vehicle. Keep it on schedule and the engine will reward you with years of dependable service.
